Cycling in Majorca

For those who think Mallorca is only a place for beach holidays, the island will come as something of a surprise. While Mallorca does have beautiful beaches it also has fantastic scenery, especially its mountain range which is 100 km long. Visitors to Mallorca have different reasons for visiting the island, some for the aforementioned beach holiday, but most will want to see something of the island and its culture. As Mallorca has an excellent and large road network (1,250 km of roads, including 700 km of second class roads, connecting all parts of the island, including the mountains and the plain to the east), cycling is extremely popular, so this mode of transport is definitely worth considering when holidaying there. It also has specialised cycling routes. Mallorca is popular with cycling groups, who come especially for the marvellous cycling facilities. Professional cyclists too regard it as the perfect place to train.

Why choose Mallorca for a cycling holiday?

  • Mallorca has a lovely climate, mild in September and November, and from January to May. The Mediterranean climate is so different from northern Europe, which has such  unpredictable weather during spring and autumn.
  • Mallorca’s secondary road system contributes to the safety of the cyclist, because it is so extensive it tends to have limited traffic. The roads are wide, averaging 6.5 m in width.
  • The sheer choice of routes is amazing. It’s possible to do a short ride; for example, between 10 and 15 km, allowing cyclists to visit several villages during their ride. The more ambitious cyclist can tackle longer routes, perhaps 150 to 200 km, reaching the farthest points of the island. The terrain varies so much too, with high mountainous routes in the Serra de Tramuntana, and level routes on the plain.
