The Caves of Mallorca

majorca-cavesThe caves of Mallorca are some of the greatest tourist attractions on the island. Many of them have become commercialised, with hordes of tourists travelling by coach to visit them. This, however, does not detract from their beauty and the sheer spectacle of them. Carved by nature out of the limestone, they are situated on the east coast of Mallorca. Their popularity enables them to be preserved, and they have been turned into a real tourist attraction with lighting effects and music.

Two of the best caves are Arta and Coves del Drac. Drac’s underground lake is amazing, and sometimes has musicians afloat, playing classical music.

Arta Caves

The caves can be visited from 10am to 6pm from May to October, and from 10am to 5pm from November to April. The length of the cave tour is 25 to 40 minutes. Guided tours enter about every half hour, and are conducted in German, English, Spanish and French.

Located close to Capdepera, in the municipality of Arta in the Cap Vermell, they are on the coast and are surrounded by mountains.

On entering the Vestibule, visitors are greeted with numberless stalactites hanging from the roof, and equally numberless stalagmites rising out of the floor.  Next is a place known as the Chamber of Hell, where there is a three minute sound and light show. Then there is the Chamber of Purgatory followed by the Chambers of the Theatre and Organ. After that is the Chamber of Flags. Here the guide will strike three different columns and a different musical note is sounded from each. The Diamond Stones are an unusual sight, resembling diamonds because of their carbon composition. Stunning views of Canyamel Bay greet visitors on the way out.

Hams Caves

These caves are famous for their tree like formations, and another underground lake. They are on the Porto Cristo-Manacor road. As well as putting on a flamboyant light show they also have musical entertainment afloat on the lake. Small groups visit these caves attended by guide-interpreters. The caves are open every day.

Other caves on the east coast of Mallorca

These include the aforementioned Coves del Drac, which are open 10am to 5pm from March to November, and from 10.45am to 1pm from November to February, and the Torre de Canyamel, open from 10am to 6pm (Tuesday to Sunday) during April to October.

Of all the caves, the Coves del Drac are most popular, and are huge, with many stalactites and stalagmites. It has an enormous amphitheatre, and an underground lake, as mentioned earlier, featuring classical music performances.

On a visit to Mallorca, these places mustn’t be missed!
